Alternatives to Aftershave

Most men use aftershave to soften their skin, reduce shaving irritation, and leave a fresh scent. Some aftershaves are alcohol-based, which can be unpleasant on the skin because it can cause dryness, redness, or a burning sensation. There are natural alternatives that can give the same benefits without harsh chemicals. 

Aloe Vera Gel

This has been recognized for its soothing and healing effects, making it a good aftershave alternative. It can calm irritated skin, reduce redness, and hydrate. This is very helpful for sensitive skin or prone to razor burns. Its cooling effect can quickly lessen the irritation after shaving. 

To apply: First, apply a thin amount of gel to your freshly shaved skin. Next, gently massage until the gel is absorbed. This will moisturize your skin while soothing it out and with no irritation. 

Witch Hazel

Used for healing skin and anti-inflammatory, this is a natural medicine that’s been used for a long time. Additionally, it can also close pores after shaving, reduce swelling, and prevent post-shave acne by removing excess oil and impurities from the skin. This also has mild antiseptic qualities that can lessen the infection from small cuts.

To apply: Use a cotton pad and gently swipe across the shaved area of your skin. 

Furthermore, you have the option to buy alcohol-free to avoid drying effects on your skin. 

Coconut Oil

This is a flexible ingredient that works as a post-shave moisturizer. It contains a high concentration of fatty acids, hydrates the skin thoroughly, and constructs a protective barrier that helps the moisturizer stay. Furthermore, it has mild antimicrobial properties that help prevent bumps from the razor and lessen the risk of infection from shaving; additionally, it also soothes irritation on the skin. 

To apply: First, put a small amount of coconut oil in your hands and warm it. Next, apply to the shaved area. Occasionally use it to avoid greasiness. 

Tea Tree Oil

This essential oil has strong anti-inflammatory and antiseptic personal effects, making it a considerable alternative to aftershave. It reduces irritation, prevents infection, and minimizes razor bumps. But since tea tree is highly concentrated, it should be diluted with a carrier oil like jojoba or coconut oil before applying it to your skin. 

To apply: First, add a small amount of tea tree oil to a carrier oil. Next, apply to the shaved area. Apply to the shaved area after you’ve added a small amount of it to a carrier oil. 

Rosewater

This is another natural alternative to aftershave. It’s gentle; it can balance the skin’s pH, soothe irritation, and lightly hydrate your skin. It also has a mild floral scent that gives a refreshing feeling as well. Rosewater is specifically a good option for those with sensitive or dry skin because there won’t be harsh reactions and it can maintain the skin’s softness.

To apply: You can either spray directly on your skin or use a cotton pad. Its cooling sensation will refresh your face and lessen any redness or irritation. Additionally, you buy it or make your own at home. 

Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) Dilution

This natural toner can be used after shaving to cleanse and tighten pores, balance the skin’s pH, and lessen inflammation. Its antiseptic properties can help avert post-shave breakouts and razor bumps. Before putting it on your skin, make sure you dilute it with water because of its acidity. 

To apply: First, mix one part apple cider vinegar with two parts water. Next, apply to your face using a cotton pad. For sensitive skin, begin with a more diluted solution. Adjust when needed.

Jojoba Oil

This is similar to the natural oils that are produced by the skin, which makes it a great moisturizer for post-shave. It won’t block pores because it’s lightweight and non-comedogenic. It can also help balance oil production. This contains vitamins and antioxidants that provide the skin and can lessen the visibility of scars from shaving.

To apply: First, massage a small amount of jojoba oil into your skin after shaving and then massage. The recipe is non-greasy, so it will quickly absorb into your skin, leaving it smooth and hydrated.

Honey and Yogurt Mask

Honey is a natural antibacterial and can help lessen redness and irritation. Yogurt has lactic acid, which will gently exfoliate and moisturize the skin. Consider using these for an ultra-hydrating and soothing after-shave treatment. With these two combined, it will make your skin feel soft and refreshed.

To apply: First, mix one tablespoon of honey with one tablespoon of plain yogurt. Next, apply it to your face after shaving. Rinse off with warm water after 10–15 minutes.

Chamomile Tea Compress

This is recognized for its calming and anti-inflammatory properties. Chamomile tea as a compress after shaving can lessen the redness, soothe irritated skin, and avoid infection. It also has antioxidant properties that can help with the healing process for small cuts. 

To apply: First, brew a cup of chamomile tea. Next, let it cool. Soak a face cloth in the tea. Compress the cloth to your face for 5-10 minutes after shaving.

Even though the traditional aftershave can work for some, it’s not the only option for aftershave care. There are a variety of natural alternatives that can help hydrate, heal, and protect your skin after shaving.
